If you have a Ford and the steering is playing up by feeling loose, feeling heavy when steering or even leaking from the steering rack then you have a couple of options available to you. You can either have your current steering rack reconditioned or have a new steering rack replacement fitted to your vehicle.
What Reconditioning Involves
A reconditioned rack is a good option if the rack body is sound and your car has been well serviced. The rack is completely taken apart, inspected and then fully re-built with new seals, bearings and track. The rack is then tested at high pressure to test for any leaks.
What a Remanufactured Unit Offers
On the other hand, a remanufactured unit is a completely rebuilt rack from another vehicle, restored to original Ford specification and comes ready to fit your vehicle, within a day or two of ordering in some cases!
Which Route Suits Your Ford
Mileage and the model of your Ford will be deciding factors. High mileage Focus and Mondeo’s may benefit from the peace of mind that a remanufactured unit will give by removing the risk of secondary wear on the new bearings etc. Lower mileage cars with faults that can clearly be seen to be isolated to that component may be better off with a reconditioned rack. What the Cost Difference Looks Like
Typically reconditioning will start from around £80 (including parts and labour) for a basic recondition and can increase to £150 or so for a more thorough overhaul, assuming the rack body is sound. A remanufactured rack and fit, can cost anywhere from £200 to £400, depending on model. Again research what would be the average price for a car repair in your area, to get an idea of a fair price for your Ford.
Checking the Repair Has Held
After the initial week of driving, test for any signs of fluid leaking from the rack gaiters, and check for any signs of loose steering at full lock. Loosening of steering at full lock is a common sign of steering failure, and if it occurs some time after repair it could indicate that further work is required to rectify the problem.
A little early attention to any steering problems will prevent a lot of potential expense in the long run.
