When you’ve spent ages choosing the perfect prom dress, it’s time to complete your outfit with the perfect accessories, and that includes the right bag. The perfect prom bag needs to big enough to carry all your essentials on the big night but also add an extra bit of glamour. Here’s what to consider when looking for a prom-night bag.
Shape and Size
A prom is a formal event, which means your handbag needs to be smaller and more elegant than an everyday one. Traditional prom bags include a classic clutch, a wristlet or a minaudiere, but you can also use a small shoulder or hand bag. For a really smart look, it’s best to go for a box, rectangle or circular clutch which is big enough to carry your phone, keys, cards and lipstick.
Material
Just like prom dresses, prom bags come in a variety of materials, just as prom dresses do. You probably won’t want to go as far as fashion blogger Amber Scholl, who made one out of bin bags. But you can add interest with bags that have sparkles, sequins or pearls, as long as your dress doesn’t already have too many of these. Classic materials include silk, satin or leather, whereas fabrics which are embroidered or woven are not as smart or glamorous.
Colour
If your dress is a bright colour, the best tip is to carry an evening bag which is in a more toned-down colour, as too much colour will be overwhelming. Bold-coloured dresses go best with bags that are silver, gold or pearly white. If your dress is dark in colour, stay away from a bag which is monochrome. For example, if you’re wearing a black dress, don’t pair it with a black clutch, as you need to make it stand out with either a bright, bold colour like hot pink or silver and gold for a classic look. If you really want a black bag, make sure it has some accents, such as a sparkly fastener or sparkly beadwork.
