What are Ganglion Cysts?

These fluid-filled bumps often form along the tendons and joints. These lumps can vary in size from a small pea up to a large golf ball. They are often a source of worry. They can appear anywhere on your body, including the hands, wrists, feet and ankles. While they are benign and non-cancerous, it is still possible that their presence could be annoying and restricting.

Symptoms

A ganglion cyst can be identified by a smooth-looking lump. The cysts are composed of synovial liquid, a jelly-like substance that surrounds the joints and tendons in order to cushion and lubricate them. Although they can last for several years, these cysts are usually not painful. They can also be left untreated and may eventually disappear. Sometimes they feel hard and uncomfortable. If the cyst is large, it can press on a wrist nerve causing a tingling, pain, numbness, or loss of movement.

Causes

It is unclear what causes ganglion cysts, but it’s thought that they may be caused by injury, trauma or overuse of the tendon or joint, which leads to an overproduction of fluid.

  • People between 15-40 years old are most affected
  • The likelihood of women being affected is higher than that of men
  • Gymnasts who frequently apply pressure to their wrist can suffer

Note that mucous or ganglion-like cysts, which develop on the side of the finger joint opposite the nail — usually associated with arthritis of the finger joint — occur more frequently in women aged between 40 and 70.

Treatment

The cyst is only treated if it causes discomfort or limits the movement of a particular joint. Treatment options include:

  • Aspiration: removing fluid from the cyst using a syringe and needle
  • Injection of steroids – Reduces the inflammation and risk of recurrence after aspiration
  • Cystectomy – Cutting the cyst out

Although ganglion cysts can be benign and usually harmless, they may cause pain and discomfort that interfere with your daily life. You can make better decisions for your health if you are aware of the symptoms and treatment options available, including aspiration or steroid injections.
