Clothing that started with fishermen

Aran Sweaters like the ones from Shamrock Gift are comfortable, stylish jumpers that take their name from the Aran islands off the west coast of Ireland. The most common Aran sweater is generally white in colour, with large cable stitches on the shoulders and argyle sleeves. This sweater style has remained popular through the years and is one of the best sellers for any style of sweater. You can find some beautiful examples from places like Shamrock Gift.

They were used predominantly by the fishermen of the Islands as they set out to secure a catch. However the sea around the Islands is the East Atlantic and it is rough and choppy even at the best of times.  These lightweight but sturdy garments were made with special wool by the women of the islands for the many sailors that worked there. Better still the wool was slightly water resistant as well. At the turn of the century they were amongst some of the most popular garments worn in this area.

Eventually these jumpers became popular across mainstream fashion and the designs that were available increased. The colours also expanded, with the traditional cream colour still remaining popular but other colours such as navy and white came into the mix. You can not find them in almost every colour you can imagine.
