Remember that your puppy has just left his whole family and the only things he knows, so he may be a little nervous when you first get him home. He may also be very excited! But it is important that you create a calm atmosphere and try to resist overly fussing, being too loud or introducing him to the whole family on the first day.

Make sure that the routine is right straight away – keep the food and water bowls where they will always be and keep the food itself consistent with what he was eating before. Puppies settle in a lot better when they have a strong routine.

When it comes to the first night the pup may be worried and a little scared about being away from his mum and siblings. It can be tempting to decide to put him in your bed ‘just this once’ but this can be a hard habit to break in the future, so provide a warm bed, as well as leaving a radio on quietly so he has reassuring sounds to sleep to.
