  1. The Ballroom in the Winter Palace at St Petersburg. The scene of the Russian Revolution, this sumptuous ballroom has one of the largest and most impressive wood floors in the world. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to clean, so much so that visitors are asked to wear cloth under their shoes as this buffs the surface when they walk around it.

  1. Boneheads flat; the album cover for Oasis Definitely Maybe. For the band’s first album, they chose the photo shoot to be close to home, namely the rhythm guitarist Paul Arthurs, better known as Bonehead flat. The smart wooden flooring, as modelled by Liam Gallagher lying on it, saw a sudden demand for them as the band became famous.
  2. The picture corridor in Polesden Lacey. A house built purely to display the wealth and status of the owner William McEwan; this long wooden floored corridor hosts an array of masterpieces that the public can view. It runs the length of the house.
