What is Polystyrene Used For?

Polystyrene is a type of solid plastic commonly found in many everyday items, including food containers, beverage cups and packaging. It is also used in many household devices, including the housing of smoke detectors. It can also be recycled to make ABS and is used in optical fibres. In addition to being a common consumer item, it is also used in aerospace and military applications.

For plastic products, styrene is often produced in a process called polymerization. To make the material, it must be first processed into beads of a uniform density. This process is called suspension polymerization. A solution of ethylene and benzene is mixed with water and a mucilaginous substance. The water then forces the globules to expand in size, forming polystyrene.

When it comes to construction, polystyrene is used extensively in building construction and packaging. Its rigidity allows it to be used for delicate structures and replications. Flotation devices made of EPF are also one of its many uses. This product is widely available and is widely used for all kinds of jobs, from construction to home furnishings. The material is even used in floristry for flower arrangements. When it comes to recycling, polystyrene is a difficult material to recycle but it can be done. Because it is so light and cheap to make, shipping companies don’t find it cost-effective to recycle this material. Most polystyrene that is used in food packaging is too contaminated to be reused. Organic particles, such as food and oils, can stick to the foam and cause the polystyrene to become contaminated.
