Where does Eton Mess come from?

If you have recently sat in a wonderful Restaurant Eton way and enjoyed a delicious meal, you may have started to wonder where the dessert Eton Mess comes from and whether it actually has any link to the Eton area.

The stories state that Eton Mess was created by accident in the late 19th Century when a pudding that consisted of strawberries, meringue and cream was dropped at a cricket match being held between Eton and Harrow. Instead of wasting the food and having nothing to serve for dessert they simply scooped the pudding up and served it in individual bowls as something of a smashed up mess.

This is of course a great story to tell but no one is sure whether it is actually true or whether strawberry mess was simply served at Eton and the name changed to give it a more prestigious sound.

If you are looking to create this gorgeous dessert for yourself you will simply need strawberries, meringue (either made by yourself or you can buy premade ones) and cream. Simply place half of your strawberries in a blend and whisk them up to create a sauce. Place meringue pieces and the cut up strawberries in a bowl and serve with whipped cream and some of hte strawberry sauce on top or you can marble this into the cream before serving.
