Reading has been home to many famous people such as; Jane Austen, Mary Russell Mitford, Thomas Hardy, Ricky Gervais and Jasper Fforde who wrote the Crime Novels “The Fourth Bear” and “The Big Over Easy”.  Reading Gaol was the notorious prison for the infamous Oscar Wilde, who was held captive there from 1895-1897.  While imprisoned there he penned his letter “De Profundis” and then, on his release he travelled to France where he went into exile and wrote “The Ballard of Reading Gaol”.
