What is psychosis?

People suffering from psychosis have a higher risk of self-harm and suicide than others; therefore, identifying the symptoms and obtaining medical help early is paramount for a person’s safety.

Psychosis is where you perceive or interpret reality in a very different way from those around you. Psychosis may be experienced once, on several occasions, or may be a life-long experience with regular occurrences.
Psychosis can be a symptom of a range of mental health issues. These include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression with psychotic features. Psychosis may also be caused by excessive intake of alcohol, or it may be drug-induced. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to the condition, or life-changing events and trauma may be a trigger for the onset.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include delusions, disorganised speech, or visual and auditory hallucinations. A person may be unable to formulate their speech, experience a lack of facial expression or emotion, and have difficulty generating thoughts.

A full clinical assessment of anyone suffering from psychosis is required to determine the cause.
Psychosis is treatable, especially with early intervention. This may be achieved through counselling, education, antipsychotic medication, and assistance with daily living tasks.

Recovery from episodes varies from immediately to days, weeks, or even months.

Training

Training courses designed for support staff help to identify the signs of psychosis and recognise the underlying contributing factors. They provide insight into living with psychosis and help to destigmatize the issue, resulting in the delivery of high-quality care.
