What is site remediation?

As we find ourselves constantly restricted for space to build new areas in the UK, we have to look for existing sites that we can repurpose. There is an ever-increasing demand for new residential, industry, commercial, retail and leisure spaces. However, there is also the realisation that we cannot simply build on the countryside and open space we have left. These Greenfields are feeling more and more pressure. Hope is in hand, especially when we have companies like the Remediation Contractors Soilfix Remediation Contractors. They, like others, can take the used land, namely Brownfield sites, and turn them into something new and to be reused.

When a site has been used for industry or commercial purposes, it can become stained and polluted by the previous activities. This means that growing plants can be difficult as the soil quality will have been eroded. There may also be chemicals and trapped gases within the earth of the site.

Companies like the one above can take the soil and, with a process of treatments and oxidisation, can bring the site back to its original effectiveness. They will basically clean them so they can be used again.

There are many examples of this. Decommissioned military airfields present a substantial green space that can be used as housing. Disused Coal mines are another; many have been turned into supermarkets or retail outlet centres. Just because a site has “a past” it no longer means that planners have to write it off as a wasteland.
