Ever since the rise of homeownership in the twentieth century there has been an increasing need for the professionalism of the Estate Agent. Before the 1900’s most people lived in rented accommodation provided by employers, private landowners and property owners or the local authority. In some cases they bought land and built their own. As we became more independently wealthy, credit became easier to obtain and the possibility of getting a mortgage was greatly increased. Homeownership rose and people wanted to move. The property ladder needs to be navigated and this is where the Estate agent comes in.

The profession of the Estate agent starts in the UK with the land agent and the house agent. Both became entwined in the twentieth century. This land and house agents were responsible for the management of land and property and also its sale and purchase when required.
